A cheap performance mod
Well if your like me then you like gas mileage and performance. Then you should remove the snorkel off of your stock airbox.
It attaches with a 10mm bold and pops right off. Its just a small piece of plastic that kills your airflow.
I have noticed a 1-2 mpg gain, and have a little more power. just that little extra something the gen1 doesnt have much of.

RE: A cheap performance mod
I heard Scott talking about this.
How many others can confirm this? It seems to easy to be true.

RE: A cheap performance mod
I took mine out last week to see if there would be any difference in performance and mpg. As Salsabx stated there was an increase of about 2 miles per gallon. The xb's responsiveness also goes up a little bit. When you first take it out the xb is sort of "freaks out" because of the better airflow but once you drive it a few blocks the ECU adapts to the change. I would recommend doing this, it take less than five minutes to do and it is FREE.

RE: A cheap performance mod
Back when I removed my snorkel I replaced it with a piece of duct work to draw air from where my shortram now gets it from. When you add the drop in K&N filter a stock/ snorkel less airbox sounds almost as good as a CAI.

I will keep this BOX till I Die! It will run till then atleast.

very true!!! did this when someone posted this on SL, 1.5-2mpg increase. way better if you change the filter to K&N drop in filter.

RE: A cheap performance mod
I did this for a while with my 1Gen before I bought the YDR intake. It draws in a lot of hot air, but you will notice an increase in performance/MPG.
Q: How many Gen 1 owners does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: SHUT UP I HATE THESE NEW LIGHT BULBS I'M KEEPING MY OLD ONES FOREVER

I just did this today.
I'll let you know the outcome as I am a skeptic until I see it actually increase my MPG.

RE: A cheap performance mod
I did that and dropped in a K&N filter into the airbox for even more effectiveness.

RE: A cheap performance mod
I just filled up today. I did not see an increase as of yet. I think I kind of overdid it with the acceleration.
I would say that the mod does help the performance aspect. In my butt dyno maybe 2-3 hp's. As for overall drive ability of the car, it seems to run a little louder, but smoother.
I'll drive the car like I normally do this time to see what the actually gas mileage is. If it increases or decreases I'll let you know.

Nice little mod thats free and effective. I'm still running the stock box so I might have to try this out.

RE: A cheap performance mod
I did this after Sam pointed it out to me and would have to agree that it makes a tad bit more noise, slight gain in HP and MPG...but does draw in more hot air.
I will keep it this way until getting a CAI.
