Anyone here ever blown a strut?

Just looking to see what the symptoms are. Yesterday, I noticed a thunk in the R/F when hitting even the smallest of bumps. It sounds like 2 things knocking togeather. I'm thinking that I might have blown the strut but it is not leaking oil and visually I cannot see anything wrong. Have to pull it to see I guess. I don't think it is the tie rods because it doesn't do it in the turns. Also hoping it is not a CV joint but I think the symptoms are different there.Anyone have any insight on this?

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

Does it only make the sound when you are driving?
Can you rock the R/F fender up and down and make the noise?
Is the strut secure up top? (meaning are the bolts tight that connect to the frame)
Is the vehicle lowered?
Do you have a camber kit installed?

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

Yes, when driving straight , small bumps. I am lowered, tanabe df210s, no camber kit. Ive been lowered for a while but just noticed this yesterday. as it will get your attention pretty quick. I don't notice any difference in ride though. and braking feels the same. I cannot get it to make a noise bouncing on it ( though it wont move much ) I've just got to get it in a garage and get under itand see if I can find anything. I don't have a garage and it is cold and raining here

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

It is possible that you have a blown strut that doesn't leak, I've seen many of them this way. Since you are lowered it may have been possible that you hit a bump and bottomed out the strut causing an internal piece to break.

Another option to look at would be your bearing plate. I haven't seen the xB's suspension, but if the strut can swivel, then it is on a bearing plate. That could possibly be bad as well.

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

it could be a minor thing coz i had the same problem a while back after lowering my box with tanabes...for some reason the strut bolt (the bigger bolt in between the 3 bolts under a rubber piece) was loose. so it made a weird annoying sound. you can also jack the box up and see if there's anything wrong underneath that is out of the ordinary. Smile

Agreed w/ Ketchup...check the center bolt first. I've heard of several peope having the same issue once they dropped their box. Did you torque it back to spec when you changed your springs?

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

It was the center nut, I caught it this morning. I just didn't have time to post up that I found it.

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

To keep my center nut from coming loose I added a second nut directly over it. It locks it down and stays tight now. Avoid using any locktite tho cause it will make disassembly very difficult.

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

When the struts were put back in did whomever put the round pad back on top to the strut, it fits around the shaft, that could be missing thus causing the thump you here.

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

even though the case was closed, i dont believe blown struts make clunking noise unless your bottoming out, and you will feel it when the strut bottoms out. To test if your strut is blown, press down on the corner that you believe is the culprit and see if the strut props right back up, if so then your fine.

A blown strut would act like a shock that is worn out. When you hit a bump the vehicle will continue to bounce up and down more than once.

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

cool deal, glad you fixed it.

ive seen alot of people with that noise, and it was always eather the nut or the top mount. our cars have a small problem with the top mounts, they need to be changed every now and then.
if its lowered the dealer will not warrenty it because it causes more stress on that part.

if anyone ever has to change the top mount is super easy, but i think ist about $100 for the stock ones.
your better off spending a few more $ and getting a aftermarket setup.

RE: Anyone here ever blown a strut?

I had the pass. side come loose on me twice before I added the second locking nut to the top. Now it's not an issue anymore.
