Today I finally decided to man up and take off those silver pieces on the steering wheel.

Step 1.) DISCONNECT BATTERY!!!! hahaha. It wouldn't be good to remove the airbag and have it blow up in your face. Please, do this. I don't want someone to forget and then come back to me saying its my fault lmao.

Step 2.) You are going to need a tool to fit this star like pattern. I'm not sure what it is called, but its a size T30.

Step 3.) Once you have your tool, there are two of these weird screws on each side of the wheel.

Step 4.) Once you remove both of these screws, the center airbag piece will just pop right off.

Step 5.) After you remove that, you will see 2 silver screws, one for each silver piece that is holding them in. Remove those.

Step 5 1/2.) Once you take those screws out, the silver piece will come out. Its a little tough but you can pull it out.

Step 6.) Ok, on the left side with the controls, there are 3 tiny screws. Be sure you put them somewhere safe haha.

Step 7.) Once you remove those, there are little clips that hold the buttons in place. Its a bit tricky, but once you pop those out, the plastic piece will come out. Just be careful, that is where brain is for the controls.

Those white things will fall right out, just put them somewhere safe Smile The buttons on the piece will come out, but you have to almost pinch the clips for them to pop out. It took me a while to figure it out. Once you see where they swivel, that is where you pinch the pieces to get them out.

I did all of this to paint mine so they matched everything else in my car.

They aren't done yet, but hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday they will be back in. I have to work the next three days so I won't have time to finish them Sad

I hope this helps, if you have any questions, feel free to ask Smile
great write up babe. good pics. and the screws are torx screws(i hope that i spelled that right).
good job on "man"ing up . . . . lol.

btw if you dont mind, info on the paint? Wink
I just used light pink spray paint I bought from Lowe's...nothing special

A MANup project from a CHICK Big Grin
Thats right, I had to man up haha. I was always afraid to take them off because of the buttons and airbag lol. Its all good.
ok, I finally put them back in hahahaha. This was the whole reason I took off those pieces.

so im going to resurect this thread to ask if u can drive around without the buttons for a day or so or would the airbag not go back on correctly with out these?

i ask cause i like to give time between color and clear coats and time to dry and let the smell cure
I went about a week without those pieces. I put the airbag back and screwed it tight so it wouldn't move around. It was perfect just like the pieces were there. Just be careful because where those steering wheel buttons are..the "brain" of the buttons are exposed and you don't want to hit it the wrong way and break something lol. Other than that, I didn't have any problem.
I don't know how I missed this DIY, but awesome write up. Soooo many people have wanted to know how to do this step-by-step.

Thumbup
