spring compressor - himynameisalex - 02-05-2010 12:48 PM

ok i just bought some new springs for my box and i was wondering if i need to use a compressor or not? i have heard that you dont have to but i have also heard that it is really hard without one

ohh sum new springs what did you get....you might want to use a compressor for the front... but the back ones you can jus swap out I'm thinking...correct me if I'm wrong though...I was gonna do mine myself but then I got lazy about it and jus had the shop were I bought mine from do it...

RE: spring compressor - SWARTZAUTOMAN - 02-05-2010 05:22 PM

i would use the spring compressor
#1 it makes things allot easier
#2 the spring is under allot of pressure and im sure wouldn't feel so good to get hit with one

i saw a spring shoot across a shop and put a mark on a block wall

RE: spring compressor - woot420 - 02-05-2010 10:29 PM

you can rent them from most auto parts stores for free just gotta leave a deposit

RE: spring compressor - SNOWJOB - 02-06-2010 10:22 PM

I didn't use a compressor when I installed springs on my first-gen. The fronts had some spring force behind them, and having a compressor would have been nice. I'd rent one just to be safe and to make things easier.

Spring compressors are for pussies! LOL(j/k).
Unless your putting in a set of TRD's I won't bother with it. I've swapped out springs 3 times on mine, twice on my wifes, twice on my other wife's and probably a 1/2 dozen other boxes and never saw the need for it except for the TRD's.

lol go watch some videos on youtube about not using one and then think about it for yourself

RE: spring compressor - SWARTZAUTOMAN - 02-08-2010 04:57 PM

Now I'm just specifically speaking about a 1st gen box. I've done springs on a tC and a compressor is a must...same w/ old GM & Ford

RE: spring compressor - lowNsquare - 02-09-2010 01:07 PM

what springs did you put on the tc? i got a tc two and have lowering springs that drop 2.4 that i need to put on

RE: spring compressor - Peej - 02-09-2010 04:28 PM

I think they were about a 2" drop. I've only done one tC and swore I'd never do another (Can you say PITA!?)

RE: spring compressor - lowNsquare - 02-09-2010 04:33 PM

Yes --

1) It makes it a lot "safer" and easier to swap out the front springs.
2) The rear springs will pull out of place without having to use a spring compressor.

For the small investment to rent a compressor it's well worth it!!! Thumbup1

RE: spring compressor - SWARTZAUTOMAN - 03-09-2010 05:27 PM

yeah the rear springs for our car just fall out if you unbolt the bottom the the shock

must auto places only require a deposit that you get back when you bring the tool back
