Stolen xB shot at and crashed into by police

A stolen black xB Classic appears to have been destroyed after being shot at by police and crashing into a police car at about 39the and Steele in Tacoma (near the Tacoma Mall).

The Tacoma Police car appears to have rammed into the stolen Scion head-on to stop the chase that had begun a little earlier when the person driving the stolen xB appears to have purposely hit a Tacoma police officer, and shots were fired (by the police).

This is all "breaking news" level information at this time, and of course subject to change, correction, additions, etc.

The driver of the xB was arrested after it was hit by the police car (both airbags deployed). The xB driver WAS injured and treated at the scene, but with this early information it is unsure when those injuries were sustained (shooting, crash, or elsewhere). The perp appeared to have blood on face and neck.

I'll poke around to see if I can find the aerial shots from KING TV's chopper, and will post a link if possible.

Someone, though, seems to have lost a nice little box - probably a 2006.5, with the optional rear airfoil. (Considering the damage to the police car, the xB stood up pretty darned well. Too bad the damage means it will probably be treated as totaled. Sad

Man arrested after Tacoma police officer is run down

Tacoma police arrested a man late this morning after he reportedly used a stolen car to run down a Tacoma police officer then led authorities on a high-speed chase.

The incident began about 11 a.m. in the parking lot of Cost Plus World Market, 4036 Tacoma Mall Blvd.

Police Capt. Mike Miller said officers were dispatched to the parking lot to investigate the possibility that a stolen car was there. One of the officers got out of his own car and was approaching the stolen vehicle when the driver accelerated, striking the officer, Miller said. The officer’s injuries were unknown. He was taken to a local hospital.

His colleagues fired on the stolen vehicle as it fled the scene, Miller said. It was unclear if they hit it.

The man then led police on a high-speed chase that ended near the intersection of South 35th Street and Tacoma Avenue South. Officers tracked and arrested the man with the help of sheriff’s K-9 unit, Miller said.

Here's some pics I've dredged up of the end of the chase...

Poor little box. Sad

Yeah, just turn him over to us for a bit at the Tacoma M&G this Friday - we'll settle his stuff a little bit... (Bet we could get one heck of a turnout, too!) Mad

Anyone recognize the Box? Do we know who's it is? Sad

An update on the Tacoma News Tribune breaking news article:

Man arrested after Tacoma police officer is run down

Tacoma police arrested a man today after he reportedly used a stolen car to run down a Tacoma police officer and then led authorities on a high-speed chase.

The incident began at 11:07 a.m. in the parking lot of Cost Plus World Market, 4036 Tacoma Mall Blvd.

Police Capt. Mike Miller said officers were dispatched to the parking lot to investigate the possibility that a stolen car was there. One of the officers got out of his own car and was approaching the stolen vehicle when the driver accelerated, striking the officer, Miller said.

The officer fired his gun at the suspect’s car. The car was struck four times as it sped out of the parking lot, Tacoma police spokesman Andrew Hankins said.

Joe Quintana, a salesman at Video Only, was inside the store when he heard gunshots. He went to the front of the building and saw the suspect’s car zip out of the parking lot, leaving a hub cap behind. The vehicle sideswiped another car near the Red Robin restaurant.

“It was crazy,” Quintana said. “He was going 60 mph out of here.”

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was in satisfactory condition. No other details about the officer – including his age and time on the force – were immediately released.

Meanwhile, other Tacoma police officers chased the suspect’s vehicle.

Another officer hit the suspect’s car in front of Pat Lowry’s home on the corner of South Wright and Tacoma avenues. The suspect bailed out and broke into Lowry’s home, Hankins said.

Officers surrounded the house and kicked in the front door. A police dog went inside and arrested the suspect.

Escorted by officers, the suspect walked out of the house and then was taken away by ambulance. He was shot and had bite marks from the police dog
, Hankins said.

Police officers had crime scenes roped off in the Cost Plus World Market parking lot and on Wright Avenue. Detectives were taking measurements and conducting interviews throughout the early afternoon.

Lowry, 71, was down the street plastering walls at another house she owns.

“I heard all the commotion and all the police cars,” she said. “I came down to watch, and it was my house.”

RE: Stolen xB shot at and crashed into by police

A little more info on the stolen xB and the chase.

The police were able to find the box because of LoJack (which I have always said simply allows an owner to find out where the bigger pieces were left...).

The "chase" lasted for about 20 minutes.

Here are video clips from KIRO TV:

This one is of their broadcast news story...
http://www.kirotv.com/video/16551138/

And this one is of the raw video that wasn't broadcast...
http://www.kirotv.com/video/16551138/

Seeing these additional pics of the front to the box, the front end is all twisted out of alignment, and the drive train (front axles, transmission, engine) is definitely toast.

Also, there was a good shot of the license plate: 889 XAC.

RIP Little Box.

Can't you look up the license plate online?

I would HATE to have my box stolen, but I would laugh hysterically at the person that does. It's not like our cars are Civics or Camarys that you see absolutely everywhere.

Nope! Not in this state (Washington). That is private information, not public.

The police can get that information, but other than in some exceptional cases, are not allowed to provide that information to the public.

Aw, c'mon. He hit around seventy in the Mall parking lot, and was running city streets at nearly a hundred until he took out a police car (and injured the officer driving). The little box did quite well.

If fact, looking at the overheads, there were a LOT more crunchy police car parts spread all over the scenery than there were box parts...

The really bad part is that this 12 time convicted felon made some poor soul lose their beloved box. Sad
