The damage isn't huge, I drove away from it. But I've been feeling sick since and I'm hating myself. I left the parking lot from work and found a patch of ice, slid into the curb at low speed. The front passenger's side wheel is pushed back a few inches, still clears the wheel well and all components seem to be there and working. I have to steer to the right to go in a straight line and it handles like a 200mph shopping cart.

Tomorrow I get to call the insurance company and file a claim. Hopefully I can get everything fixed without too much trouble/expense. Hopefully the insurance company won't jack my rates. Crying

Sorry to hear...thats a sick feeling. I've been bad to mine a couple times and someone else did the hatch in for me a few months ago. The lower control arms on these things are EASY to bend and a bitch to change out.

Like everyone else im sorry to hear that. I only had mine for a week and hit a dog and did 1500 worth of damage.

Thanks everyone. I called today and got things rolling. I can take my car anywhere, but if I take it to one of Nationwide's "blue ribbon certified" repair shops they will guarantee the repair for the life of the vehicle. So I ended up picking "York Auto Group" because they're a Toyota dealership/service center.

The next thing I'm worried about is them using cheap after-market parts to fix my car because it's more than 5 years old now. I talked to them about it and they said that I "don't have an all OEM policy". So I talked to York Auto Group separately and they said that if OEM parts exceed the cost of the estimate that I can just pay out the difference.

I get the feeling that this is really going to hurt. I have a $500 deductible and I'll likely pay out the A$$ for OEM parts...

after market parts aren't all that bad, it depends on who you get them from.
being a body shop im sure they have parts dealers that they regularly deal with that supply good quality parts that fit right.

paint work it what makes me nervice. ive seen a # of cars that i can see a heavy orange peel to the new paint.

i did about $2600 damage to my FJ and they used after market parts, everything fit perfect and the paint looks good as new, you can't tell anything ever happened, i was very happy with the work.
the only thing that sucked was it took them about 10 days to do the work and my Ins wouldn't pay for a rental.

I think that particular anxiety of mine is a combination of never letting anyone else work on my car and having previous bad experiences with after market parts. One thing that comes to mind is having to replace the alternator a couple times on my Pickup over the course of a few months because it kept failing.

I hear you there. I would be really scared to have to have something painted because of damage. Lucky me, I don't have any body damage with this accident.

All in all, I'm really new to this "having to get my car fixed" thing. This is the first time I've actually had to file a claim on a vehicle.

i was in the same boat with my FJ
ive always done my own work but i didn't have the $ to fix it so i had to file a claim

in the long run the shop is responsible for fixing it right, it they don't get it right don't take the car back, if they give you any problems you just call your ins. they will smack the shop around untill they get it right.
hopefully you don't have to go threw all of that and chances are you will not.
i hope it all goes well for the box

It was towed away 2 days ago, but they haven't called me back with a quote yet.

Correction. It is now the 9th. It was towed 5 days ago and they haven't called me back with a quote yet.

EDIT: Got the car back, it looks great! Took it for a drive and it drove great! But... the next day I was driving to work and the traction control light started to blink, then the right front wheel (the one that I hit) started to break. I wasn't expecting it and the car lurched to the right, hard. Scared the crap outta me. So the car is back at the repair shop. Now they're telling me they "can't reproduce the problem". It's never done that before the accident, so it has to be related. I'm thinking it's the sensor; everything works, but the computer thinks the wheel's slipping when it's not. Hopefully I can get this new problem fixed without too much headache.
