Manual transmission trouble with 1st gear

RE: Manual transmission trouble with 1st gear
Mine used to WAAAAAY jumpy in the morning and the rest of the time for that matter. For some reason, once I changed my exhaust it really changed how the car drove.
If it don't want to drop into reverse, gently try to drop it in R and ease out the clutch just a tad and it'll drop right in.
I had a lot of problems with mine wanting to die at take off. This was AFTER it got warm. I would give it some gas as I'd take off but it was like nothing was happening till I really depressed the pedal. I can't tell you how many times I stalled that thing in the first few months. What I eventually did was take the slack out of the throttle cable (and there was a lot) , made a HUGE difference.

RE: Manual transmission trouble with 1st gear
Yea a lot of people have tightened the throttle cable and have noticed more throttle response due to the lack of slack and time between pressing the pedal and at rest. I havent done it yet.

you can tighten the throttle cable with auto too. The cable is next to the throttle body under the hood cant miss it. loosen up the 2 nuts the hold the assembly together tighten the cable then tighten the nuts.

Thanx, does it really improve it that much? And I just take out the slack so that it is tight correct?

RE: Manual transmission trouble with 1st gear
thats correct. Youll need 2 open end monkey wrenches to loosen and tighten the nuts. it doesnt increase horsepower and give you more gas mileage, it just changes the way you drive after. If you tighten the slack then there wouldnt be any freeplay within the time you have your foot at rest and give it gas. it would automatically go.

Could you do a small writeup on it as well? As I am not very good with newer motors, I am better with older carberated motors and motorcycle motors (ATV's, trikes, motorcycles, ect.) and have yet to mess with a newer 4 cyl. or a newer motor at all for that matter... lol\

Btw, I put in the Bosch Platinum 4 spark plugs a while ago and I did notice a slight difference in the acceleration and such, but not much

RE: Manual transmission trouble with 1st gear
Well I HAD the same issue but not badly, it kind of went from there to BOOM. MAF and water in some tubes/CAI. The sluggish jumpy starting off in first gear comes from a lack of Oxygen/Gas mix. What happened with mine is it was taking in a little drip of water here and there as well causing it to burp on the start. The water burning off gave me a white smoke too(noticeable cause it was about 9 degrees out when it happened). But the thaw a couple days before that cause all of the ice to melt and somehow formed excess water.

My recommendations would be to do an entire system cleaning, fuel and all, and clean out any in and out pipes for air flow that you can think of, even vacuum tubes.

Toyota sure did have a flaw when they made these, and the aftermarket parts that are coming out for CAI and SR, not to mention the water build up I had last summer when my passenger side floor got SOAKED and it took me all summer to figure out it was that little tiny hose that drains off through the cab, lol
