Kenwood DDX512 or Pioneer P4000?
So, I'm spending my economic stimulus check on a Double-Din DVD head unit for my car. I've got it down to two options.
The Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD: OR, the Kenwood DDX512: They both have adjustable illumination, are iPod-ready and steering wheel control adapters, all musts for me. The only difference between the two is that the Kenwood has a pricey navigation module available for it. However, that's not really an issue because I'm purchasing a Tomtom so I can have GPS both in an out of my car. So, what do you guys think? Oh, and my Premium head unit will be for sale in the middle of May if anyone wants to score a deal on it. Q: How many Gen 1 owners does it take to screw in a light bulb? The jury's still out - I'm going to try to find action shots of both interfaces and make my decision that way. I like how simple the Kenwood is, but things seem to be more readily available for the Pioneer, and the Pioneer is $100 cheaper. Hmm. I have also heard that the Kenwood is glitchy.
I'll let you know when my other HU is available, it should be in about a month. Q: How many Gen 1 owners does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: SHUT UP I HATE THESE NEW LIGHT BULBS I'M KEEPING MY OLD ONES FOREVER |

I would have an AVIC-D3 if wanted a navi unit, Sparky, but it seems illogical. I'd rather buy a handheld GPS and be able to have navigation in more than one car.
I'm probably buying the Pioneer - I got a chance to play around with the P4000 today and it's a pretty slick unit. Simple, but solid. It's basically a D3 without nav. Not D3, I said D2, not a typo, and there is much more than just navi. You can do custom wallpapers and firmware hacks too. Plus over all it is a better built unit for about the same price range. Just a suggestion, but out of those two get the P4000

Go Pioneer if its between those choices. If you come into some more cash I'd go Eclipse cuz they are made by Toyota. (sort of)

RE: Kenwood DDX512 or Pioneer P4000?
I ended up buying the Kenwood because I found one for less than half of retail, at AAFES of all places! I also found the nav module for a much more reasonable price ($230 compared to the $900+ crutchfield was asking), and I can always add that later.

I got the Kenwood DDX512 installed and put in the iPod cable today. I'm in love.
A totally illogical purchase that I'm satisfied with.

RE: Kenwood DDX512 or Pioneer P4000?
Hey guys. I like the pioneer its a good easy to use unit, I had one in my 08. But the 4000 isnt that nice. I think you might be more impressed with the kenwood unit. i went with the clarion MAX685BT. Not that i dont like pioneer, but there base models arent that great for the money i got my unit 50% off retail on ebay brand new. and its plug and play with IPOD. It connects via USB cable that you can mount anywhere. Just putting in my 2 cents lol..

Salsabx Wrote:Hows the head unit holding up jim????? I love mine but wish the ipod would work correctly. It's holding up mighty fine. The iPod glitches occasionally, but the Kenwood DDX512 really is a nice unit that can do a lot. I occasionally regret not getting an AVIC-D3, but I'm still pleased with what I have.
