Waterpump noise

Hey,

The bearings in my water pump are going out. Has anyone seen a howto on removing the water pump?

RE: Waterpump noise

I have the alternator removed already and am ready to remove the water pump. I'm just waiting on it to get here (Tuesday). It's really not that hard. I do have to say that the alternator was a ***** to remove. The bottom mounted bolt on the was so frikin tight that I had to use the meat stick on it. (Meat Stick = 4 ft breaker bar)

Dizam hommie, How many miles do you have on your box? Just wondering, because I want to know if mine is going to go out any time soon, or might go out.

RE: Waterpump noise

the water pump should be real simple.
i love the fact that it doesn't run off the timing

AMEN to that.

I've got 50k on the car. It sounded like something internal like a knocking. Or, if you've ever heard a diesel engine, it sounded identical to that. I first thought it was my crank pulley, but upon further inspection and the good 'ol screwdriver stethoscope technique, I was able to narrow it down to the water pump pulley.

I have the pump coming in on tuesday and I'll post up a howto on what I did so anyone else that has this issue can fix it themself. I'm just incredibly happy that it was the water pump and nothing internal.

RE: Waterpump noise

Wow, what a difference. I replaced the water pump and the pinging/clicking noise is now gone. I do have to say it was a PITA getting the pulley out, but not hard to do. I usually enjoy working with a Haynes manual, but they haven't made one for the box yet so big thanks to Peej for supplying the directions on getting this puppy out.

I probably saved $300 in mechanic fees for doing it myself.

RE: Waterpump noise

Now now, I'd love to do a write up, but it will not be picture intensive as usual. Due to the fact that working on a car can bring out the worst in people at times Tongue I didn't take but 3 pics. But, it's really not that hard to follow.

Does anyone need a write up immediately?

Not yet, but was the bolt through the pulley necessary?

RE: Waterpump noise

If your asking how I kept the waterpump pulley from turning, all I did was put an angled needlenose pliers and wedged it against the pump. Worked like a charm.

RE: Waterpump noise

So how long did it take you to change it out? What about access through the wheel well or was it easier to do it from the top?

RE: Waterpump noise

Total time without instructions = 3 hours
Total time with instructions = 1 1/2 hours

As for getting the pump out, I took it from the top. I removed the alternator first and when from there. Since I already loosened the alternator to remove the belt, I went ahead and took it off.
