What are Others Running for Sparkplugs?

I'm currently running NGK Irridiums and love the way the xB idles and runs in general. I even noticed slightly better mpgs. It seems the engine runs so much nicer with the new plugs. I also gapped them wider to .044 per NGKs instructions.

Don't waste your money on fancy plugs. Your car will run better and more effecient if you just drop in NGK basic copper plugs. When they are on sale you can sometimes get them for $1 each. The only downside to these plugs is you should change them sooner, like 20k or 30k miles or so.

Basic copper plugs are not even in the same league as Irridiums. You get what you pay for. I like the idea of not having to change them for 100K. Saves wear and tear on the threads in the head.

RE: What are Others Running for Sparkplugs?

I've heard of many people getting a performance boost from those plugs and the NGK recommended gap and not the manufactures gap.

The scion gap is only like .032 but the coil gives out plenty of juice so .044 seems to give just the right spark to give a more complete combustion.

RE: What are Others Running for Sparkplugs?

I'm not cheaping out when I buy copper plugs. Copper plugs honestly perform better, especiall if you have done any sort of performance mods to your car.

The only bennefit you are getting from those Irridium plugs is they last about 3 times as long. You are paying way too much for them and they don't perform quite as well as the copper plugs.

Now if you get Irridium plugs that are 1 heat range hotter than the copper equivalent, they will perform as well as the copper plugs and last you 100k miles. Reason is the copper plugs burn a little hotter then the Irridium equivalent.

I don't have scientific evidence to support any of this, but I do have 15 years of performance engine building experience. My 200 HP Rabbit with 12:1 compression and individual throttle bodies runs Bosch copper plugs, my friends 500 HP Eclipse runs NGK coppers, and another aquantance of mine has a CBR900RR with nitrous running on NGK coppers.

I'm just saysin that if you want to spend alot more money you will get plugs that last you 100k miles, but if you want equal to or better performace, spend 1/5th the money and just get copper plugs.

Maybe coppers work better in a high perf. VW engine? It doesn't apply here IMO. I'm simply stating my actual results with the NGK Irridiums in my 1.5 Asian Hemi and letting others decide what they want.

And I'm not saying you are wrong or insulting your knowledge.

I am simply saying that in my experience with VW's and Mitsubishi products, I have never needed anything more than NGK coppers, or Bosch Supers (Bosch's copper plug).

Truce.

I especially like this bit of info. I wasn't aware of this.

Yep, more complete combustion = more power

I knew that part, but I wasn't aware that the xB could still fire the plugs properly with a gap that wide.

I'm running stock oem ones (whatever those are) until I hit 30000. I think thats when you change them, right?

RE: What are Others Running for Sparkplugs?

30000 is my change interval, but I'm using basic copper plugs. I think the OE plugs last longer, 50000 might be when you change them. Look in your owners manual or call the dealer, they can tell you when to change them.
